Playing midfielder Joe Thompson made his football career at Rochdale and Manchester United's academy until his passing from cancer at age 36 during his third cancer fight. Thompson spent more than 200 training matches at Rochdale following his 2013 discovery of nodular sclerosis Hodgkin lymphoma while representing Tranmere Rovers. The diagnosis resulted in his medical recovery so he could return to professional football but he received another cancer diagnosis while back with Rochdale in 2016. Doctors declared his cancer in remission for the second time during 2017.
In April of 2024 Thompson revealed that his cancer had returned for a third occasion marking stage four lymphoma together with lung metastasis. His positive outlook and strength motivated numerous admirers throughout his struggle with health problems.The Rochdale football club paid their respects to Thompson through their statement that "Joe" fought bravely against cancer for his third time before passing away on Thursday with his loved ones present at his house. Rochdale AFC honored Thompson by remembering his talent in football while recognizing his role as husband to Chantelle along with being the father of Thailula and Athena Rae.
Thompson started playing football in the youth academy of Manchester United eventually moving to Rochdale in 2005. During his career he spent time with Tranmere Rovers and Bury before finishing at Carlisle United. Following his retirement from professional football in 2019 Thompson dedicated himself to raising cancer awareness and mental health education so he could assist those who faced similar difficulties.Fans along with his team members and all members of the football world will forever cherish his inspirational work and football career.
