J.D. Vance will join his wife Usha Vance who serves as Second Lady for a Greenland exploration beginning Friday March 28, 2025. Mrs. Vance's cultural event visit faced widespread Greenlandic and Danish opposition which changed both the purpose and plan of her excursion.
Usha Vance planned to journey to Greenland for cultural reasons and the Avannaata Qimussersu the national dogsled race. The presence of top U.S. officials Mike Waltz and Chris Wright in the delegation became a source of worry to Greenlandic and Danish political leaders. The Greenland Director Múte B. Egede criticized a U.S. power demonstration through his country when the United States sent senior officials as a sign of American aggressiveness.
The White House changed parts of the planned travel schedule because of increasing public opposition to the trip. The Vances will conduct their tour at the Pituffik Space Base to receive security briefings on Arctic matters while they interact with American military personnel at that location. The altered visit seeks to resolve security issues which have emerged as central complaints.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen condemned the U.S. diplomatic pressure as she declared it unacceptable for both Greenland and Denmark. The Prime Minister stated that Danish officials would reject such pressure indicating a nation-wide discontent with U.S. Greenland policy.
